What to Do if You Chip a Tooth on Vacation
May 21, 2025 9:00 amVacation is for relaxing—not for emergency dental visits. But accidents don’t always follow the itinerary. Whether it’s a poolside slip, a surprise popcorn kernel, or an unexpected bite into hard candy, chipping a tooth while traveling can catch anyone off guard.
If it happens to you, don’t panic. A chipped tooth isn’t always an emergency, but it does need attention. Knowing what to do can help you stay calm, comfortable, and ready to enjoy the rest of your trip.
If you’re a patient of Hermitage Family & Cosmetic Dentistry and experience a chipped tooth while away, these tips can help you manage it until you’re home. And if you’re visiting Hermitage, TN and need urgent care, Dr. Aileen Kruger and Dr. Taylor King welcome emergency patients.
Assess the Situation
First, rinse your mouth gently with warm water. If there’s bleeding, apply light pressure with a clean cloth or gauze. For swelling, a cold compress can help. If pain is present, over-the-counter pain relievers may offer some relief until you can get help.
Look in the mirror. If the chip is small and you’re not in pain, it’s likely safe to wait until you return home. But if there’s sensitivity, sharp edges, or a larger break, it’s worth calling us—or a trusted local dentist—depending on where you are.
Try to Protect the Tooth
Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. Stick to soft foods and liquids when possible. If the tooth is sharp, dental wax (often sold at pharmacies) can be placed over it to avoid irritating your tongue or cheek.
Bring any broken fragments with you in a clean container—they may help with repair, especially for visible front teeth.
